Cloud migration professional services, and what happens after the move

Two different things are sold under the same set of words. A migration is a project: it has a scope, an end date and a fixed or day rate price. Managed cloud is a contract: it recurs, it is usually priced per user, and it starts the day the project stops. The same firm sells both, and a proposal that quotes one while assuming the other is the most common reason a cloud move costs more than the number the business agreed to. Establish which document you are reading before you compare it with anything.

Cloud migration companies sell two purchases: which one is this quote?

Read the proposal for an end. A project says what is in scope, what the cutover date is, what happens if it slips, and what the price is when the last item moves. A contract says what is covered every month, what the seat count is on day one, and what the notice period is. If one document contains both, ask for them separated, because the monthly line will outlive the project line by years and it is the one that compounds. Ask directly whether the project price assumes the contract, since a discounted migration bought against a three year commitment is a finance decision rather than a technical one, and it should be priced both ways before anybody signs.

The four things that decide what cloud consultancy services and a migration cost

How much data moves, because the volume sets the window and the window sets how many nights are paid for. Whether any application cannot move, which is the item that quietly doubles a quote: a licence server tied to a hardware address, a line of business application whose vendor will not support it anywhere else, a machine that talks to plant on the factory floor. Who rewrites identity and access, which is the real work in most moves and the part least often itemised. And what runs in parallel while both estates exist, because paying for the old thing and the new thing at once is a cost with a duration, and that duration belongs in the quote as a number of weeks.

Managed cloud services: nobody quotes the second year

Moving to somebody else's cloud converts a capital purchase into a monthly charge, and that charge grows with use rather than staying where the proposal left it. Storage accumulates, licence counts follow headcount, backup retention is charged on what is retained, and moving data back out is billed by the volume that leaves. Ask the provider to model the monthly cloud spend at the end of year two at your expected headcount, separately from its own management fee, and ask which of the two lines it controls. A firm that cannot separate the platform bill from its own fee is not in a position to reduce either, and the reconciliation of licences and storage should be a named monthly deliverable.

What the record can and cannot tell you about the price

This site reads what providers publish on their own pages. Of 29 IT providers read on 10 September 2026, not one publishes a migration fee, a project price or a day rate for professional services. Seven publish a recurring figure and every one of those is a support rate rather than a project rate: Ntiva states Starting at $99 per user and Electric states $10/user/mo, with a per-seat median across the seven of $99.50 a user a month, the lowest at $10 and the top of the highest published band at $300. Six of the seven quote per user and one per workstation. So a per-seat figure is a comparison for the contract and no comparison at all for the move, and the migration number arrives only after you ask.

What to ask a cloud migration services provider before the day rate is agreed

Four questions settle most of the variance. Which named person does the identity and access work, since that is the skill the price actually buys. What the assumption is about applications that cannot move, and what happens to the price when one is found during discovery rather than before it. How long both estates run in parallel and who pays for the overlap. And who holds the global administrative credential for the Microsoft 365 tenancy when the project closes, because a migration that ends with the provider holding the only such credential has made the next conversation about leverage instead of service.

Questions people ask about cloud migration professional services

Do cloud managed service providers price a migration as a project or monthly?

As a project, with an end date and a scope. The monthly figure a provider publishes is a support rate for running the result, not the cost of moving.

What does this record publish for migration costs?

Nothing. Of 29 providers read on 10 September 2026, none publishes a migration fee, project price or day rate. The seven priced figures are all recurring per-seat support rates.

What most often makes a healthcare cloud migration quote grow?

An application that cannot move, such as a licence server, an old line of business application or a machine connected to plant, found during the work rather than before it.

Who should hold the tenancy administrator credential afterwards?

The business should hold one itself. Ask for it in the project close document, alongside the estate documentation, rather than requesting it later.
